This Face Changer mask is hand-carved by Nuu-Chah-Nulth artist Tim Paul. It has been carved in red cedar, painted in black, red, white, and navy acrylic, and adorned with cedar bark. It was carved in 1975 and is in very good condition.
For the Nuu-chah-nulth people, face-changing masks are often used in potlatch ceremonies as symbols of transformation. Performers wearing these masks embody powerful spirits or ancestors, guiding the community and reinforcing cultural teachings. Sometimes, the dancer wears one mask while concealing another within their regalia. To transform, the dancer briefly lowers themselves into their regalia, seamlessly exchanging one mask for the other, before re-emerging wearing the new mask. As a transformative figure, the face-changer can convey themes of interconnectedness between humans, animals, and the spirit world.
The mask measures approximately 11 1/2 inches or 29 1/4 centimeters high, 11 inches or 28 centimeters wide, and 6 1/2 inches or 16 1/2 centimeters deep.
