This Cod Fish Mask is hand-carved by Coast Salish artist Tom LaFortune. It has been carved from red cedar, painted in acrylic, and adorned with 3 antlers. It was acquired from a collector and is in good condition with minor signs of wear, which is reflected in the price.
Codfish are an important source of food for many coastal First Nations. Some Northwest Coast Indigenous peoples believe that an eclipse occurs when a monster in the sky, often referred to as a Codfish, attempts to swallow the moon. To counteract this, people will dance around a smoky, smoldering fire, hoping to force the monster to sneeze and cough up the moon.
The mask including the spikes measures approximately 13 inches or 33 centimeters high, 8 1/2 inches or 21 1/2 centimeters wide, and 7 inches or 18 centimeters deep.
