This Chief of the Undersea World or Komokwa Mask is hand-carved in red cedar by Master Carver Bill Henderson from the Kwakwaka´wakw Nation. The mask is painted in red, green, and black acrylic, and features cedar bark bundles on each side of the mask, 32 abalone inlays, and 8 abalone teeth. 

The Komokwa Symbol represents the “Wealthy One” and is the mythical King of the Supernatural Undersea World. He is also called the Copper Maker. The King or Guardian of the Sea is a very powerful and wealthy ruler who lives in a great House made of copper under the sea, filled with food and treasures. It is said that he is the master and protector of the seals and has live sea lions as house posts that guard the entrance.

The mask is up to 13 1/2 inches or 34 centimeters wide, 15 1/2 inches or about 39 centimeters long, and is about 10 inches or about 25 centimeters deep. The last photograph shows Bill Henderson with his Komokwa Mask.
