This Gyidakhanis Grouse Mask was hand-carved in 1983 by Kwakwaka'wakw artist Max Chickite. It has been carved from red cedar, painted in black, blue, and red acrylis and adorned with cedar bark and feathers. It was purchased from a collection and is in excellent condition. The mask is named after a dance from the Kwakwaka'wakw First Nation.
The grouse is the caller. In some potlach ceremonies the grouse calls the other animals out onto the floor.
The mask, including the features, measures approximately 19 inches or 48 1/2 centimeters high. Excluding the feathers and cedar bark, the mask measures about 8 inches or 20 centimeters high, 7 inches or 18 centimeters wide, and 4 1/4 inches or 10 3/4 centimeters deep.
