This large Crooked Beak Headdress is carved and painted by Kwakiutl artist Trevor Hunt. It has been carved from red cedar, painted in black, white, red, and turquoise acrylic, with cedar bark hanging down. It is accented with one inlay of abalone and one onlay of copper on each eye. It comes with a removable cedar base.
The Crooked-Beak is a supernatural bird recognized by the dramatic curving spiral off the end of its beak. In a potlatch, a group of supernatural birds, including the Crooked Beak, the Huk Huk, and a Raven, tame the possessed Hamat´sa-Dancer.
The headdress, excluding the cedar bark, measures approximately 38 inches or 96 1/2 centimeters long, 26 inches or 66 centimeters high, and 10 inches or 25 centimeters wide. Including the cedar bark, and when resting on the stand pictured, the mask and stand measure about 63 inches or 160 centimeters high, 32 inches or 81 centimeters wide, and 12 inches or 30 1/2 centimeters deep.
The headdress can be displayed suspended from the ceiling or placed on a fabricated stand.
This piece is part of our exhibition "" which is running from September 9th to December 30th, 2023 at the gallery.
