This Dogfish platter was hand-carved in argillite in 1974 by renowned Haida carver Reg Davidson. It was acquired from a collection and is in very good condition.

The Dogfish Symbol or Shark Woman Symbol represents one of the most powerful and elusive supernatural beings of Haida mythology, a powerful shaman. The story of how she became a shaman of extraordinary power is now lost, but we know that her power came from the spirit of the Dogfish, of the Shark family.

The platter measures approximately 7 3/4 inches or 19 3/4 centimeters long, 3 1/2 inches or 9 centimeters wide, and about 3/4 of an inch or 2 centimeters thick.
